Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya called the Russian ban on his entry into the country unacceptable. He commented on the Russian restrictions at a press conference on March 4.

At the same time, Iwaya pointed out the need to maintain contacts between Tokyo and Moscow.

"Although relations between our countries are difficult now, there are still many issues that require discussion between the diplomatic departments. "... From this point of view, I regret the ban on my entry," he said. The head of the diplomatic department also stressed that the Japanese side will continue to work to ensure peace in Ukraine, including within the framework of international organizations.

Earlier, on March 3, the Russian Foreign Ministry has imposed an entry ban on nine Japanese citizens, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs. The restrictions were Moscow's response to Tokyo's anti-Russian sanctions.

In addition to Iwai, the list includes Japanese Ambassador to Ukraine Masashi Nakagome, his predecessor in 2021-2024 Kuninori Matsuda and Senior Vice President of the Japan Agency for International Cooperation (JICA), head of the JICA office in Ukraine Hideki Matsunaga.
