The victory of the US President Donald Trump's presidential election came as a big surprise to the vast majority of the heads of the European Union (EU) countries, who for a very long time believed that the administration of the previous president Joe Biden would remain in power. This was announced on March 3 by Chairman of the State Duma Vyacheslav Volodin.

"Moreover, all of them not only believed in the upcoming triumph of Biden, and then [former US Vice President Kamala] Harris, but also did everything to achieve it. Including publicly supporting them and at the same time speaking negatively towards the current President Trump," Volodin wrote on his Telegram channel.

The Ukrainian leader did not count on Trump's victory either Vladimir Zelensky, who actively traveled to USA opposed the politician's candidacy. The entire "propaganda machine" of Europe was built on the principle "who is not with us is against us," Volodin noted. And media outlets that offered an alternative view of the conflict were shut down after being accused of supporting Russia.

"And against this background, another candidate wins — Donald Trump. And not because of it, but in spite of it. He has his own vision of migration processes, diametrically opposed attitudes towards transgender people and same-sex marriage, and, of course, issues of economics and the world order. When they're talking about who he's for? Trump is for America. [Russian President Vladimir] Putin is for Russia. This is quite obvious. But there is a question that existed before and still exists now: who are the heads of European states for?"— said Volodin.

The speaker of the State Duma added that Trump himself perceives European politicians "more than critically," as he has serious business successes behind him, and therefore does not intend to put himself on the same level with them, notes "The newspaper.Ru».

Earlier, on March 2, Politico reported that Manfred Weber, the head of one of the factions of the European Parliament (EP) of the European People's Party (EPP), after Trump's meeting with Zelensky at the White House href="https://iz.ru/1847524/2025-03-02/v-ep-prizvali-k-sozdaniu-nezavisimoi-oboronnoi-politiki-evropy " target="_blank">called for taking the first steps towards an independent defense policy Europe. EU leaders fear that a shift in US priorities could leave Ukraine vulnerable and weaken the strategic position of NATO on the continent, the media noted.

Before that, on March 1, Newsweek magazine reported that European countries extremely weak militarily and dependent on the United States. On February 19, the European Parliament factions noted that the EU can no longer rely on the United States to protect their common interests, and it's time for them to take their own defense and security into their own hands.

At the same time, Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala said that Europe should href="https://iz.ru/1841993/2025-02-20/premer-chekhii-fiala-vystupil-za-uvelichenie-evropeiskikh-investitcii-v-oboronu">" put "money on the table" and invest more in defense if countries want to be taken seriously.
