People's Democratic Party wins parliamentary elections in Tajikistan

The People's Democratic Party (PDP) won the parliamentary elections in Tajikistan with 71.3% of the vote. This was announced on March 3 by the head of the country's Central Election Commission, Bakhtiyor Khudoerzoda.

The NDP is headed by the current President of the country, Emomali Rahmon. The party won 49 parliamentary mandates, 47 of them in single—mandate constituencies, 12 on party lists.

In addition to the NDP, the agrarians with five seats, the Party of Reform Economists with three seats, as well as the Democrats and Socialists, both groups with one seat each, overcame the five percent barrier to entry into parliament.

The turnout in the elections was 85.3%: out of 5.5 million voters in the republic, more than 4.7 million voted

Earlier, on February 24, the President of Russia Vladimir Putin held telephone conversations with Emomali Rahmon. The two leaders discussed trade, economic and cultural cooperation between Russia and Tajikistan, as well as cooperation in the field of security. The Presidents expressed satisfaction with the high level of strategic partnership Moscow and Dushanbe agreed to continue personal contacts.
