French President Emmanuel Macron said on March 2 that European countries were left alone and could not rely on NATO as before because of the position of the American leader Donald Trump.

"The Europeans were left alone, threatened in the east and abandoned in the West. They can no longer rely on NATO as before, as it has been weakened by Trump's position," he said in an interview with the newspaper href="https://www.lefigaro.fr/international/ukraine-dissuasion-nucleaire-depenses-militaires-les-pistes-d-emmanuel-macron-pour-pousser-le-reveil-europeen-20250302 " target="_blank">Le Figaro.

Macron noted that there is an "incredible awakening" due to concern about Americans. According to him, he believed that an autonomous Europe could be built "by resuming cooperation with Russia," but this "failed."

The French leader also assured that in the coming weeks in the territory of Ukraine will not have any European troops.

"The question is how we will use this time to try to achieve an acceptable truce, with negotiations that will take several weeks, and then, after signing the peace, with the deployment of troops," he said.

Macron also said that France needs to prepare for future defense spending targets of about 3-3.5% of GDP, and cited the example of Russia, which, according to him, spent 10% of its GDP on defense for three years.

"Probably, at the initial stage we will need €200 billion to be able to invest," he added. The French President noted that the French army could deploy nuclear weapons in partner countries, which would make it possible to replace USA, whose warheads are located in Europe. It is clarified that on the issue of nuclear deterrence, Macron wants to "open a discussion" about its European aspect. He assures that the basic principles of deterrence will remain.

At the same time, the French president pointed out that Americans represent 30% of NATO. He believes that it will take 10 years for France to reduce its sensitivity, "investing huge amounts of money at the national and European levels." In addition, he announced his plans to apply "to Brussels for money, which France lacks so much."

February 28, Macron призвал European countries to abandon the "happy vassalization" in relations with the United States. The French leader stressed that Europe should unite and develop a common strategy in building relations with Washington.
