If you don't properly organize your meals during Lent, you can harm your health. They warned about this on March 3 in Rospotrebnadzor.

"It is necessary to fast as much as possible and maintain a variety in the diet. If you have health problems, consult a specialist before adhering to the fast," the message says.

The ministry noted that periodic restrictions on food intake can have a positive effect on the physical condition of the body.

During fasting, the body is relieved because a person reduces the consumption of fatty foods and increases the intake of fiber and vitamins. As a result, the immune system strengthens, the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) improves, and metabolic processes normalize. In diabetic patients, blood sugar levels decrease. External manifestations include the restoration of a healthy complexion, partial "care" of excess weight and changes in posture.

"The main rule of fasting is the exclusion of all animal foods: meat, fish, poultry, milk and dairy products, eggs. Accordingly, the basis of the diet will be plant products — grains, legumes, vegetables, fruits, nuts, mushrooms," the Rospotrebnadzor added.

Animal protein should be adequately replaced with vegetable protein, which is found in beans, peas, nuts, mushrooms, and dried fruits. The calcium found in dairy products can be found in seaweed, citrus fruits, nuts, and sesame seeds.

In the absence of animal food, which is rich in protein and promotes a long-term feeling of fullness, frequent hunger attacks may occur. In order not to experience it, you need to eat regularly, include in your daily diet foods rich in complex carbohydrates and containing vegetable protein. You can also pay attention to soy products, the agency advised.

During fasting, it is important not only to adhere to the necessary diet, but also to get out of it correctly. Animal food should be included in the diet gradually, combining it with plant foods.

In 2025, Lent will be held from March 3 to April 19. It is not recommended for children, pregnant women, patients with gastritis, pancreatitis, cholecystitis, gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcer, those who have recently suffered an infectious disease and patients diagnosed with anemia.

Gastroenterologist and expert doctor at the Hemotest Laboratory Ekaterina Kashukh on March 1 warned that a sudden switch to plant-based foods and avoiding meat during Lent can lead to digestive disorders. She advised not to lose the variety of the diet, as well as to be aware of the chosen diet. The expert added that the inclusion of fruits and vegetables is especially important in fasting.
