South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster declared an emergency in the state due to wildfires. This was reported on March 2 on on the website of the South Carolina Department of Emergency Management.

"This state of emergency ensures that our rescuers, who are working tirelessly and risking their lives, will receive the resources they need," the ministry said in a statement.

According to the department, operations to eliminate more than 175 forest fires on an area of about 1.7 thousand hectares are continuing. The spread of the fire is mainly due to dry and windy weather.

"Although most of the current wildfire activity is concentrated in the Pee Dee region, there is a sharp spike in wildfires in the rest of the state, which puts additional strain on firefighters," Darryl Jones, head of the Forest Protection Service of the South Carolina Forestry Commission, said in a statement.
