More than 700 Russian and Belarusian athletes took part in the Russian Indoor Athletics Championships, which took place from February 28 to March 2 in Moscow. Belarusian athletes competed outside the Czech Republic, but competed for prizes and victories in the IX stage of the "Snow Queen". Among the favorites, Kristina and Artem Makarenko, Polina Tkalich, Svetlana Aplachkina, Ekaterina Koneva, Maria Kochanova, Polina Knoroz, Maxim Afonin, Valeria Moskvitina won. But Ilya Ivanyuk became only the second. Our other legend, Sergey Shubenkov, finished only sixth.

Shubenkov's failure

The Russian Championship was held at the CSKA athletics and football complex, in three days athletes played 30 sets of awards. The first day of the competition was decorated with two bright finals in the women's 60 m and 3000 m. In the 3000 m run, Svetlana Aplachkina took the lead two laps before the finish. Anastasia Krasilnikova was able to maintain her high pace, making an exciting spectacle at the finish line. At some point, Krasilnikova managed to beat Aplachkina by half a body, but Svetlana refused to miss the victory and was able to accelerate again before the finish line (8:48.44). Krasilnikova also set the Russian U-23 indoor record (8:48.45). Another talented athlete, Maria Ermakova, won the bronze (8:54.30).

Kristina Makarenko became the winner in the 60 m race. To the last, Yulia Karavaeva also claimed victory. Both athletes recorded 7.26 in the protocol, and only the photo finish determined that Makarenko, who celebrated her 28th birthday that day, was three ten thousandths of a second faster. The third time was shown by Belarusian Yanina Lutsenko (7.32).

Artem Makarenko also pleased his wife with the victory with an excellent result. In the 60 m hurdles, he scored a score of 7.54 (for meeting the European Championship standard, he received an additional 300 thousand rubles from the VFLA). Semyon Manakov is on the second line of the protocols (7.67), Anatoly Kiselyov won the bronze medal of the championship (7.71), Vitaly Parakhonko from Belarus became the third at the stage of the "Snow Queen" (7.70). The 2015 world champion, three-time European champion Sergey Shubenkov became only the sixth (7.72).

— I run on the lawn and get 7.73, I run straining and also get 7.73,— Shubenkov admitted to TASS. — It's a paradox. Of course, it's a shame that I became the sixth. But this is definitely not my result. I have a lot of strength. Winter has become a time of experimentation for me, the summer season is a separate conversation. But with the results I had last summer and the summer before last, there's nothing to do at the summer World Cup, to be honest. If I start running out of 13.50 at the beginning of the summer, then it will be possible to talk about my prospects. But now it's hard for me to assess my chances.

Among women, Victoria Pogrebnyak regained the title of Russian champion in the 60 m running (8.13). Last year's national champion Daria Osipova was just a little behind the winner (8.16), Polina Graudyn was third (8.24). In this discipline, the IX stage of the "Snow Queen" was won by Elvira Graborenko from Belarus (7.98).

In the 60 m run, Danil Pavlov became the national champion for the first time (6.62). Yaroslav Tkalich (6.66) and Alexander Mironov (6.67) finished next. Ilya Sazonov also recorded 6.67 in the protocol, but he lost six thousandths to Mironov and remained outside the top three.

Difficult success

In the 400 m, Polina Tkalich won with a big advantage, finishing with a score of 50.98. She was more than one and a half seconds ahead of the second prize-winner Ekaterina Ivanova (52.56), the third place was taken by Valeria Savenkova (53.28). Tkalic's 400-meter result was the fourth in Europe this year and the seventh in the world.

The 3000 m race was confidently won by Vladimir Nikitin (7:51.04). Egor Limonov (7:59.69) and Evgeny Rybakov (8:00.13) are also in the top three.

In the triple jump sector, Dmitry Chizhikov showed how to react to the results of his rivals, flying 16.94 (this is the best result of the Russian season). Just one centimeter was not enough for him to repeat his personal indoor record. Oleg Braiko encouraged Chizhikov to make such a jump, who in the third attempt became the leader of the sector with a personal best of 16.67, and eventually rose to the second step of the podium. Vitaly Pavlov won the bronze medal with 16.42 m.

Alyona Gordeeva became the Russian champion in the shot put with 17.27 m. Natalia Troneva won silver — 17.01, Daria Shinkevich bronze — 16.85. Alyona Dubitskaya (Belarus) won the IX stage of the "Snow Queen", who showed the best result of the day — 18.17. Elena Trus, another representative of the Union Republic, won the silver award of the "Snow Queen" — 17.47, Alena Gordeeva bronze.

Maxim Afonin won the men's title of champion of Russia in this discipline — 20.36. Konstantin Lyadusov — 18.93 and Semyon Borodaev — 18.88 rose to the podium with him. The stage of the "Snow Queen" was won by Oleg Tomashevich (Belarus) — 20.86. Maxim Afonin won silver, Evgeny Briga (Belarus) won bronze — 19.41.

Polina Knoroz (4.78 m) won the pole vault competition. For a long time, the three-time Russian indoor champion Aksana Gataulina competed, but in the end, the 24-year-old athlete from St. Petersburg settled on a result of 4.55. The men's victory was won by Matvey Volkov, who now plays for Belarus, who overcame the mark of 5.85.

The favorite in the high jump, Maria Kochanova, had a more difficult time. The two-time champion of Russia beat Kristina Koroleva only in the jump-off, breaking the bar at a height of 1.95 m. The third place was taken by Belarusian Karina Demidik (1.93). The men's high jump was a sensation. The bronze medalist of the World Cup and the European Championship Ilya Ivanyuk was beaten by Yaroslav Kutkova. The athletes were separated by 2 cm (2.24/2.22). Nikita Anishchenkov became the third (2,20).

World and European champion Ekaterina Koneva took first place in the triple jump. In her best attempt, 36‑year-old Koneva scored 14.05 meters. Daria Nidbaikina took the second place (13.98), Victoria Gorlova became the third (13.91).

Two-time Russian champion Valeria Moskvitina had no equal in the pentathlon. According to the sum of the five types, she scored 4,376 points. Marianna Bakosova was four points behind her, and Agniya Labtsova took third place (4134).
