Matthias Warnig, former executive director of the Nord Stream 2 project operator and managing director of Nord Stream 2 AG, is working on a plan to restart the pipeline with the support of American investors. This was reported on Sunday, March 2, by the British newspaper Financial Times (FT) with reference to sources.

It is noted that in the administration of the President of the United States Donald Trump is aware of the development of a plan to restart Nord Stream 2 and considers the initiative as a tool in peace negotiations on the conflict at Ukraine and a way to deepen economic ties between the Russian Federation and USA.

"The USA would say: "Well, now you can rely on Russia, because trustworthy Americans are involved in this"The newspaper quotes the words of a former senior American official.

It is clarified that the leadership of the European Union (EU) has learned about the activity around the gas pipeline and has already discussed the situation among themselves. According to the authors of the publication, the implementation of the Warnig initiative would give the United States a comprehensive influence on energy supplies to Europe.

Meanwhile, as the newspaper pointed out, Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation, said that he had no information about any negotiations on the resumption of the gas pipeline.

Earlier, on February 5, it was reported that Nord Stream 2 could potentially be involved href="https://iz.ru/1834379/2025-02-05/smi-uznali-ob-obsuzhdeniiakh-v-frg-variantov-ispolzovaniia-severnogo-potoka-2"> for the supply of hydrogen to Germany from Finland. It is also being considered for the transportation of natural gas from the Russian Federation after the peace agreement on Ukraine.

At the same time, on December 26, 2024, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic suggested that the United States href="https://iz.ru/1815122/2024-12-27/prezident-serbii-zaiavil-o-namerenii-ssha-priobresti-severnyi-potok " target="_blank">may wish to purchase Nord Stream within a year in order to supply gas from Russia to Europe. In turn, Igor Yushkov, an analyst at the National Energy Security Fund considered such a scenario unlikely.

Leaks on the Nord Stream and Nord Stream–2 gas pipelines were discovered in September 2022. The pipelines were registered two powerful underwater explosions. Traces of explosives were found at the accident site. Russia is seeking an international investigation of the terrorist attacks. In February 2024, the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin said in an interview with American journalist Tucker Carlson that for the explosions the CIA is responsible.
