A Canadian resident had a tooth implanted in her eye to restore vision. The operation involves attaching the tooth to the front of the eyeball. This was reported by the Canadian TV channel CTV News with reference to sources.

It is noted that the unique operation has already been performed in other countries, but this was the first time for Canada.

"This operation restores transparency in the front of the eye," says surgeon and ophthalmologist Greg Moloney— one of the doctors who performed the operation.

According to the TV channel, the operation was performed at Mount St. Joseph Hospital in Vancouver. First, a 74-year-old patient had a tooth removed. After that, surgeons cut a hole for a plastic lens and sewed the tooth to the inside of the patient's cheek for three months.

"The point of implanting it for three months is that it should build up a layer of supportive tissue," Moloney explained.

In addition, the surgeon said that the tooth is used because it takes root well on the front of the eye. At the same time, the body rejects any synthetic material in the eye.

The operation was successful. The woman is recovering well, the publication said.

Earlier, on December 12, 2024, in the Italian city of Padua, doctors performed the world's first href="https://iz.ru/1805918/2024-12-12/v-italii-kardiokhirurgi-proveli-pervuiu-v-mire-peresadku-biushchegosia-serdtca"> a working heart transplant. This will eliminate damage from ischemia (decreased blood supply) and reperfusion (manifestations of restoration of blood circulation). both at the time of sampling and during transplantation, experts said. The patient is healthy and preparing for discharge.
