Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban demanded that the European Union (EU) begin "direct negotiations with Russia on a cease-fire" in the conflict on Ukraine and not try to find a compromise among the members of the association. This was reported on March 1 by the newspaper Financial Times (FT) with reference to Orban's letter to the President of the EU Council, Antonio Costa.

"It has become obvious that there are strategic differences in our approach to Ukraine that cannot be overcome through drafting or communication," the document says.

It is clarified that this letter appeared in the public domain after Brussels distributed a draft resolution for the upcoming summit of EU leaders in the UK, which will be held on March 2 and provides for additional military support for Kiev and a rapid increase in European defense spending.

The President USA Donald Trump and the Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky met at the White House on February 28, and there was a verbal altercation between them. Trump blamed Zelensky in a disrespectful attitude to Washington and pointed out the unpreparedness of the president of Ukraine towards a peaceful settlement of the conflict. After the skirmish, the Ukrainian leader left the White House ahead of schedule. According to media reports, Zelensky flew to the UK, where he will take part in the conflict resolution summit.

The CBS News channel on the same day noted that Trump after the incident does not intend to talk with Zelensky. According to the interlocutors of the publication, in connection with the situation at the negotiations, the Trump administration has doubts about the reality of concluding a ceasefire agreement in Ukraine.
