The President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin said that the soldiers of the 6th Paratrooper Company, who fought an unequal battle with terrorists 25 years ago, showed bravery and courage. The corresponding telegram on Saturday, March 1, was published on site The Kremlin.

"The soldiers and officers of the legendary company served the Fatherland in a difficult, dramatic time when international terrorism unleashed a criminal, unjust war against us," the message reads.

In addition, the Russian leader stressed that at that time it was about the fate of the country, its independence and territorial integrity. The paratroopers thwarted the bandits, standing up to defend the Motherland, despite the superiority of the enemy's manpower. So, the heroes fulfilled their duty with honor, not sparing their lives.

As the President of the Russian Federation pointed out, the courage and bravery of the fighters will forever remain in the heroic chronicles of the Motherland, in the memory of loved ones, comrades, fellow soldiers and friends, in the hearts of citizens.

Putin also added that the traditions of selfless service to the Motherland, laid down by their ancestors, are now being worthily continued by Russian soldiers during a special military operation (SVO), defending the independence and sovereignty of the country.

Later that day, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Putin called Lydia, the mother of Mark Yevtyukhin, commander of the Pskov paratroopers battalion, who lost her son in the battle. The press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation noted that the woman keeps in touch with all those who lost their relatives back then, and coordinates assistance.

During the counter-terrorism operation in the North Caucasus on March 1, 2000, soldiers of the 6th company of the 104th Parachute Regiment of the 76th Airborne Division under the command of Mark Yevtyukhin engaged in battle with a significantly outnumbered militant group. The heavy battle lasted more than 15 hours.

At a critical moment, Yevtyukhin and Captain Viktor Romanov called artillery fire on themselves. 84 soldiers of the 6th company were killed in the unequal battle. Mark Yevtyukhin was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of Russia.
