The court sent General Popov to jail in a fraud case.

The court sent the former commander of the 58th Army, Major General Ivan Popov, to jail in a case of major fraud and forgery. This was reported on February 28 by a correspondent TASS from the courtroom.

Popov was arrested on May 17, 2024 for two months. He and another person involved, businessman Sergey Moiseev, on May 24 was charged under Part 4 of Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Fraud"). According to the investigation, both were involved in the theft of metal products worth more than 114 million rubles in 2023. These goods were purchased by the military-civil administration of the Zaporizhia region. They were planned to be handed over to the Russian military as humanitarian aid, but the rolled metal was removed from the warehouse and sold in another region.
