Russia is going to invest almost 2 trillion rubles in the development of the Northern Sea Route by 2035.

"Today, the region acquires a completely new meaning and becomes a key region for the development of our country <...>. The main driving force behind the economic growth and development of the Arctic remains the people who have linked their fate with the North. The task of the state is to provide Northerners with a decent quality of life," Alexei Dyumin, Assistant to the President of the Russian Federation and Secretary of the State Council, emphasized at a meeting of the State Council commission on the Arctic and Northern Sea Route on February 28.

Nikolai Kharitonov, Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Regional Policy, Problems of the North and the Far East, shared that countries such as China and India are currently showing interest in cargo transportation.

Cargo transportation along the Northern Sea Route is growing every year. Thus, by the end of 2024, 37 million tons were transported. At the same time, it is noted that revenues from Arctic projects account for a sixth of Russia's GDP. Thanks to the transport corridor, goods are transported twice as fast as on other trade routes.

It is expected that 150 new vessels will be built as part of the Northern Sea Route project and 12 icebreakers will be added to the existing nine. In addition, it is planned to modernize the coastal infrastructure, Arctic airports and the construction of liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals.

The Governor of the Murmansk Region, Andrey Chibis, in turn, pointed out the need to increase the transportation capacity of railways and synchronize this work with the development of port facilities. "We need more cargo ships to transport goods along the Northern Sea Route," he concluded.

The proposals outlined will be forwarded to the President of the Russian Federation To Vladimir Putin, who will speak at the Arctic Forum at the end of March. The development of the Northern Sea Route will be the main topic of the event.

On January 23, Sergei Naryshkin, Chairman of the Russian Historical Society (RIO) and Director of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), called the Northern Sea Route one of the href="https://iz.ru/1826878/2025-01-23/naryshkin-nazval-sevmorput-odnoi-iz-samykh-perspektivnykh-transportnykh-arterii-mira " target="_blank">the most promising transport arteries in the world. According to him, the strategic decision to develop it has fully justified itself.
