The State Duma reacted to the extension of US sanctions against Russia

The extension of US sanctions against Russia was expected, as it is more about business than politics. This was stated by State Duma deputy Alexei Chepa on Friday, February 28. According to the politician, the extension does not exclude the easing or even lifting of some restrictions in the near future.
"But in general, the restrictions will still remain. It is not necessary to expect that everything will be taken and removed now. Because we are talking here about an unconscionable struggle in the so—called free market," the parliamentarian said in an interview with Lenta.Ru .
He recalled that American companies had also suffered from a number of anti-Russian sanctions. According to Chepa, it is precisely such restrictions that may begin to be relaxed in the near future.
"I think in the near future we will see not only an easing of sanctions, but they will be lifted in those areas where the interests of American business were affected, which also suffered. So, as the process of peaceful settlement of the Ukrainian conflict progresses, and diplomatic relations between Russia and the United States are softened, sanctions will also be lifted. Although some will remain," he concluded.
The day before, the president USA Donald Trump extended for a year a number of anti-Russian sanctions in connection with the situation on Ukraine. The document deals with restrictions imposed by the American side in 2014, 2018 and 2022.
This decree was signed on March 6, 2014 by former President of the United States Barack Obama. Later, it was replenished with restrictions introduced by Trump and Joe Biden.
At the same time, on February 26, Trump announced that in the future it would be considered href="https://iz.ru/1845192/2025-02-26/tramp-zaiavil-o-rassmotrenii-vozmozhnosti-sniatiia-sanktcii-s-rf-v-budushchem " target="_blank">the possibility of lifting American sanctions against Russia. He noted that at the moment there are no such agreements.
In turn, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on February 20 that Washington was ready href="https://iz.ru/1842427/2025-02-20/glava-minfina-ssha-dopustil-izmeneniia-sanktcii-v-otnoshenii-rossii " target="_blank">both mitigation and tightening of sanctions against Moscow. According to him, it depends on the negotiation process.
