Two Russian divers died in the Philippines due to being caught in a strong current. This was reported to Izvestia on February 28 by representatives of Divona diving club.

They confirmed that two day dives were planned for Thursday, February 27, in the Verde Island area. The group consisted of four people and a guide — all are certified divers.

"The first dive went well. During the second dive, the group was caught in a strong downdraft. The guide and two divers were able to get out by clinging to the reef at 19 m, and two were blown out of sight to a considerable depth," the diving club said.

It is specified that one diver was found on the surface of the water with an empty oxygen cylinder, resuscitation measures were carried out for him, but it was not possible to save him. Another tourist was found already dead.

"The causes of death of divers are not related to shark attacks," the club representatives emphasized.

Earlier in the day, it was reported that in the Philippines during the dive, a group of tourists was swept away by the current, two Russians died. It was noted that there were four Russian divers — two were able to escape together with the instructor. The dead were 29-year-old Ilya Peregudin and 39-year-old Maxim Melekhov. Russian Embassy in the Philippines confirmed the death of two Russians near the island of Verde.

Dmitry Orlov, course director of the PADI Professional Instructors Association, also told Izvestia that the deaths of divers in the Philippines could have been href="https://iz.ru/1846681/2025-02-28/ekspert-sviazal-gibel-daiverov-iz-rf-na-filippinakh-s-silnym-techeniem " target="_blank">is associated with a strong current and lack of oxygen.
