The deaths of two Russian divers in the Philippines could be attributed to strong currents and lack of oxygen. This was announced to Izvestia on February 28 by Dmitry Orlov, course director of the PADI Professional Instructors Association.

"The current has started to accelerate. At some point, it blew very hard, away from the reef and down. This happens when tremors occur. They are practically invisible on the ground, underwater this is reflected in unpredictable currents, and quite strong ones," said Orlov.

He recalled that two divers managed to grab onto the reef, the other two were carried to depth, and then washed to the surface. Orlov said that one of the victims was found quickly, he was already found unconscious, and his death was pronounced at the hospital. The body of the second was found in the evening. He spent a lot of time in the water and was bitten by sharks, the PADI director noted.

"This is not what they say, that the sharks [tore it up]. That is, the sharks had already arrived when [the body] was floating on the surface," he said.

Orlov noted that divers could run out of air at great depths due to the fact that a deep dive was not planned — cylinders were provided for it. with a large volume of air.

According to him, the divers were professionals — they had the appropriate certification, according to the rules of this sport, they could dive without an instructor. He called the incident an accident.

On February 28, it was reported that in the Philippines during the dive, a group of tourists was swept away by the current, two Russians died. It was noted that there were four Russian divers — two were able to escape together with the instructor. The dead were 29-year-old Ilya Peregudin and 39-year-old Maxim Melekhov. Russian Embassy in the Philippines confirmed the death of two Russians near the island of Verde.
