The American bank Citigroup mistakenly transferred $81 trillion to a client instead of $280. This was reported on February 28 by the newspaper Financial Times (FT).

It is clarified that the incident occurred back in April 2024, but it has only now become known about it.

According to the newspaper, the operation was mistakenly approved by two employees of the financial institution at once. The third noticed the error only an hour and a half after the transaction.

The bank stated that its "control system promptly detected an error when entering data between two accounts," as a result of which the transaction was canceled.

Citigroup is currently working on automating transaction verification processes to prevent similar situations in the future, the newspaper noted.

On February 28, the Russians were told, how to refund money in case of unauthorized debit. First of all, you should check the transaction history in the bank's mobile application or on the website in your personal account. If the money was lost due to a technical malfunction, the credit institution is obliged to check and return it. In case of refusal, the client has the right to apply to the court.
