The number of children in Russian social institutions has decreased from 60,000 to 53,000 since June 2024. This was announced on February 28 by Maria Lvova-Belova, the Presidential Commissioner for Children's Rights, in an interview RIA Novosti.

According to her, such indicators were achieved during the All-Russian Inspection of the System of prevention of social orphanhood (VISP), which took place since June last year.

"When we started, there were 60,000 children in institutions. At the moment, there are already 53 thousand, even a little less for this period of time. The gradual restructuring, the focus on the family rather than the institution, leads to the fact that we are gradually reducing this indicator. And this is not just an indicator, it's not just a figure, it's the fate of specific children and families of our Russians," she said.

Lvova-Belova also added that 4.5 thousand personal files of children were studied by the inspection specialists during the visits, 2.3 thousand were employed. At the same time, 500 children were returned to their families.

On September 17, 2024, the Children's Ombudsman reported that 1,700 children in Russia per year returned to their families, a thousand of them reunited with their blood parents. Thus, VISP inspections were conducted in 11 regions of Russia, eight of which the Children's Ombudsman visited personally.
