FIDE expressed its condolences over the death of chess player Spassky

The International Chess Federation (FIDE) has expressed its condolences over the death of Soviet chess player Boris Spassky. This is reported on on the Federation's website on Thursday, February 27.

"Rest in peace, Boris Vasilyevich Spassky. One of the most talented players of his generation," FIDE said in a statement.

Boris Spassky became the world champion as a universal chess player in 1969, when he managed to defeat his compatriot Tigran Petrosian. They have played World Championship matches twice. In 1966, Petrosyan won, three years later he lost. Spassky became the new world champion, writes Regnum News Agency.

Spassky managed to hold the title until 1972, when he lost to American Robert Fischer in a match.

Boris Spassky, 10th World chess champion, died in Moscow at the age of 88 earlier, on February 27. According to Andrey Filatov, President of the Russian Chess Federation, many generations of chess players have studied at his games and continue to do so.

In 1976, the chess player emigrated to France, and returned to Russia in 2012.
