- The ophthalmologist spoke about the contraindications and threats when wearing lenses.

They are also not recommended for use during colds, pregnancy, mental disorders, and systemic diseases, such as exacerbation of rheumatoid arthritis, she added.
"Improper use of contact lenses can lead to inflammation of the eye surface, as well as to the development of keratitis, an acute inflammation of the cornea, and in some cases to corneal ulceration, which, in turn, poses a serious threat to vision. To avoid negative consequences for eye health, it is important not to violate the terms of wearing lenses and follow hygiene rules for their use," the specialist explained.
So, she noted, it is necessary to put on lenses before washing, and remove them after. Before putting on the lenses, wash your hands thoroughly and treat the lenses themselves as recommended by the doctor. To clean and store contact lenses, use a fresh solution and a clean container designed for this purpose. In addition, the source emphasized, the lenses should not be rinsed with tap water.
Among other things, sometimes the use of contact lenses can aggravate the condition of dry eye syndrome, provoke allergies, inflammatory processes on the surface of the eyes, and mechanically damage the cornea.
"Before using contact lenses, it is necessary to consult an ophthalmologist to make sure there are no contraindications. A doctor may prescribe lenses to correct vision, for example, for nearsightedness; astigmatism is a visual defect in which images are distorted or blurred. Sometimes a doctor may recommend contact lenses as an alternative to glasses, especially for people who need peripheral vision, such as drivers and athletes," the expert concluded.
Earlier, on February 18, ophthalmologist Svetlana Mirgorodskaya shared with Izvestia that the feeling of "sand in the eyes" can be caused by improper wearing of contact lenses. Also, according to the ophthalmologist, unpleasant sensations in the eyes can be caused by various infectious and allergic diseases, including conjunctivitis, blepharitis and keratitis.
