If The United States will impose customs duties of 25% on European goods, which will lead to the deterioration of Europe's economic situation. Mikhail Belyaev, Candidate of Economics and financial analyst, told Izvestia about this on February 27.

"The economic situation in Europe will worsen because financially the main large producers, the main European exporters will weaken. There will be fewer budget revenues," the expert said.

He also suggested that such a decision by the American side would cause some tension in trade between the United States and France. However, this is unlikely to escalate into a trade war.

"Companies that produce certain products that they need to sell participate in foreign trade. The duties simply mean that these companies will simply receive less profit, because they will pay this duty and will find themselves in a more difficult financial situation. But if the flow of goods decreases, then not much," Belyaev explained.

At the same time, in the United States of America, the cost of goods imported from Europe will increase. In order to compensate for the additional costs, the Europeans will have to raise prices.

"Americans don't start a trade war. At least 50% of [US President Donald] thoughts Trump's goal is to protect his own market from external competition, from foreign goods, and to enable the domestic market to develop in its own industry. This is his plan for reviving the economy," the economist pointed out.

The expert added that the American leader does not need to suppress Western Europe, because he has already achieved his goals and put European countries in a subordinate position.

"Europe does not have such a vivid answer for the United States of America. Moreover, the Europeans are not ready for a trade war, despite the rhetoric of diplomats, because diplomats talk about their problems, and economists have other concerns. They need to make a profit, they need to produce products, and therefore they understand that if you start a trade war, it is death for the company, and no one is ready for this," Belyaev said.

At the same time, he clarified that currently in Europe there is a sluggish economic development and sluggish prospects for the future, due to the ill-considered sanctions regime.

"Europe will have a very difficult time crawling out of this crisis state," the analyst concluded.

Earlier, on February 26, the US president announced that he intends to href="https://iz.ru/1845696/2025-02-26/tramp-anonsiroval-vvedenie-poshlin-ssha-v-25-na-tovary-iz-evrosoiuza " target="_blank">impose customs duties of 25% against the European Union (EU) not only on cars, but also on "everything else". The press service of the European Commission clarified that the EU intends in the near future href="https://iz.ru/1845771/2025-02-27/v-evrosoiuze-namereny-nemedlenno-otvetit-na-obeshchannye-trampom-poshliny " target="_blank">respond strongly to Trump's promised tariff changes.
