The idea that the European Union (EU) will create its own army without the participation of USA, has been heard for many years, but so far it has not led to anything. In addition, such a scenario is unacceptable for Washington, which benefits from controlling European countries through NATO. This opinion was shared by military expert Alexei Leonkov in an interview with Izvestia on February 27.

On the eve of the Ukrainian political scientist Peter Oleschuk in an interview with the Polish edition Onet said that the European Union may create its own military bloc. According to him, this is due to the fact that the United States is no longer the guarantor of global security, "leaving Europe alone with Russia." Now, the analyst stressed, the EU countries have no other choice but to consolidate.

"Since the formation of the European Union, they have all been talking about the European army, but it still does not exist. No, for one simple reason: there is NATO, the United States' instrument for governing Europe. And the United States will never allow Europe to create its own army, so that the United States is outside this army, outside the leadership of this army," Leonkov commented.

So, he believes, the relevant statements by European politicians and officials are a concussion and speculation. The interlocutor of the publication noted that Brussels does not have its own military management systems, headquarters, and commands, because the EU is only a bureaucratic superstructure over the states of the region, which for unclear reasons has appropriated the right to govern these countries.

"For some reason, these states put up with the dictates of the European Union, people whom no one elected. If in every country the president is chosen by vote, then [European Commission President] Ursula von der Leyen was not chosen by anyone. She was just appointed," the military expert added.

At the same time, Leonkov drew attention to the fact that EU countries are currently parasitizing the United States on defense issues — 90% of the costs are paid by Washington. At the same time, he stressed, NATO in any case does not protect and has never protected anyone except the United States itself.

Prior to that, on February 20, Politico learned about the concerns of European politicians that the transatlantic alliance may have come to an end. On February 19, the Financial Times reported that without Washington's support, EU countries They are not capable of conducting any military operation. NBC also reported that the United States can reduce its military presence in Europe due to priorities in the Asia-Pacific region and the situation on the border with Mexico.

Earlier, on January 24, the President of the United States Donald Trump said he was not sure is it worth continuing to sponsor NATO, since Washington protects the alliance's members, but does not receive help in return. He noted that he would seek to ensure that the states of the North Atlantic Alliance href="https://iz.ru/1825636/2025-01-21/tramp-zaavil-o-celi-zastavit-strany-nato-narastit-rashody-na-oboronu-do-5-vvp"> increased defense spending to 5% of GDP.
