The mass implementation of the digital ruble project is postponed to a later date than previously announced. This was announced on February 27 by the head of the Central Bank of Russia, Elvira Nabiullina.
Earlier it was reported that the launch of the project is scheduled for July 1 of this year. The regulator will announce a new date for the mass introduction of the digital ruble later.
"We will move to the mass introduction of the digital ruble somewhat later than originally planned, namely after we have worked out all the details in the pilot and consulted with banks on the economic model that is most attractive to their customers," Nabiullina said during the annual meeting with the Central Bank's leadership organized by the Association of Banks of the Russian Federation.
She noted that about 1,700 citizens and about 30 companies are participating in the pilot project to create a digital ruble. The project will expand both in terms of the number of participants and the set of operations, the head of the Central Bank added.
Alla Bakina, Director of the Department of the National Payment System of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation, February 17 stated that the digital ruble cannot "burn out" and will not become a mandatory means of payment for citizens. She stressed that the funds in the digital account belong exclusively to its owner and only he can dispose of them.
