- Scammers have come up with new schemes to deceive moviegoers on the background of the Oscar Award

Online scammers became more active before the Oscar ceremony. Attackers create scam resources to steal data and money from moviegoers. To watch films nominated for this year's prestigious award for free, they ask potential victims to perform certain actions. Kaspersky Lab told Izvestia on February 27 about the schemes of scammers.
Experts have discovered two relevant scam schemes related, in particular, to the films "Conclave", "Anora", "Evil" and "Brutalist".
According to its authors, you can watch the premiere on one resource if you get the code in a specially created bot in the messenger. If you enter it, you will receive a notification about the need to subscribe, and to do this, specify your payment details. This is how scammers collect financial information. In addition, if the bot is not deleted, it will send scam offers, experts warned.
Also, on another portal, scammers lure those who want to see the nominees by offering to watch a movie without ads. To do this, they ask you to enter your phone number, and you receive a password that supposedly allows you to disable ads. If the user enters it, they will receive an offer to subscribe. As a result, they may lose their payment details and money, and they may not be able to watch the movie.
"Hackers use hot topics to lure out personal data, and the famous film award was no exception. We urge users to pay attention to the official release dates of movies on streaming services, TV or other sources and not share confidential information on questionable resources. It would not be superfluous to have a reliable security solution that prevents you from switching to a phishing or scam resource that mimics, for example, an online movie theater," said Olga Svistunova, senior content analyst at Kaspersky Lab.
Earlier, on January 29, it was reported that spammers are most likely in 2024 engaged in phishing, a type of online fraud aimed at gaining access to confidential user data — logins and passwords. This followed from the information provided by the Yandex 360 platform.
Phishing is often a mass mailing of emails on behalf of popular brands, as well as personal messages within various services, for example, on behalf of banks or on social networks, experts noted.
