The Federation Council announced the Romanian authorities' fear of Georgescu

The Romanian authorities are trying their best to remove the independent candidate for president of the republic, Calin Georgescu, from the elections because they are afraid of him. This statement was made on February 26 by Alexey Pushkov, head of the Federation Council Commission on Information Policy.

The senator commented on the detention of the Romanian presidential candidate href="https://iz.ru/1845414/2025-02-26/kandidata-v-prezidenty-rumynii-dzhordzhesku-dostavili-v-prokuraturu-na-dopros " target="_blank">for questioning on the afternoon of February 26. According to media reports, he is accused of involvement in an organization with a fascist character and falsifying statements about the sources of financing the election campaign.

"The Romanian authorities and Brussels are so afraid of Georgescu...> that they are trying to remove him from the election by all means," Pushkov wrote on the Telegram channel.

The senator said that the charges against Georgescu were far-fetched. In addition, he called the arrest of the Romanian leadership candidate a response from the leadership of the European Union (EU) to criticism from the vice president USA J.D. Vance.

On February 22, a rally in support of Georgescu was held in Bucharest. On that day, Mihai Enake, the leader of the deputies of the right-wing Alliance for the Unification of Romanians party, announced that the Romanian opposition had gathered href="https://iz.ru/1843435/2025-02-22/rumynskaa-oppozicia-sobrala-svyse-200-tys-podpisei-za-dzordzesku " target="_blank">more than 200 thousand signatures in favor of the independent presidential candidate. Repeated elections will be held in Romania on May 4. The second round is scheduled for May 18.
