Manufacturers of canned vegetables have announced an increase in the cost of products in 2025. This was announced to Izvestia on February 26 by representatives of several large companies in the market.

According to them, the reasons for this will be the high key rate, the rising cost of raw materials, including tomatoes, zucchini and other vegetables, increased labor costs for employees, expensive logistics, as well as the rising cost of cans and lids.

"Prices for canned vegetables will rise from 10 to 15% this year. Among the reasons are the shortage of labor and increased wages, less acreage, and an increase in the cost of raw materials. After all, we are now mainly buying seeds abroad, and their cost, like the cost of money transfers, has increased significantly. In addition, the price of glass jars and lids has increased by 10%. Plus inflation," Vladimir Yakovlev, commercial director of the Tablecloth—Samobranka canned vegetable production, explained to Izvestia.

Igor Morozov, director of the tomato department at TM Pikanta, noted that as early as 2024, the vegetable preservation market faced a noticeable increase in prices, which was due to increased demand and supply constraints. According to him, the retail price increased by 10-12% compared to the previous year, reflecting the general inflationary trends in the country. For TM "Pikanta", the price increase was about 10%, which is associated with a dynamic increase in cost.

"Further price increases for canned vegetables are expected in 2025. It is planned to be in the range of 5-7%, while tetrapack prices are projected to rise by about 15%. Inflation in the food sector may reach 9%, which will affect the cost of raw materials, including tomatoes, zucchini and other vegetables," the business representative said.

He also noted that the main reasons for the price increase will remain the increase in raw materials and production costs, seasonal fluctuations in demand, as well as external economic factors such as currency fluctuations and changes in international trade. An additional impact will be the increase in prices for parts for production equipment, especially imported ones.

The main factor affecting the business now is the high refinancing rate of the Central Bank — it affects all components of the cost of the product (raw materials and packaging, components, logistics), Olga Bykova, marketing director of the Uncle Vanya group of companies, told Izvestia.

According to her, the business is also strongly affected by the shortage of personnel and rising wages (agricultural staff and production staff).

"Considering that vegetable preservation is a relatively low profitability and the overwhelming majority of producers do not have margin reserves in order to contain such a significant price increase, and they are forced to cover the cost increase by raising prices. Over the past two years, due to the shortage of labor and rising wages, the price of a borscht set and canned vegetables has increased significantly. Without a well—thought-out government policy in the field of seasonal labor, the situation will continue to worsen (a decrease in available labor and rising costs), which will directly lead to higher prices for finished products," she said.

Dmitry Leonov, deputy chairman of the board of the Rusprodsoyuz association, also told Izvestia that manufacturers of various product categories are currently experiencing unprecedented pressure caused by a serious increase in the credit burden (due to the high key rate), currency exchange rate dynamics, rising prices of raw materials, logistics, tariffs of natural monopolies, and rising costs of pharmaceutical products.

"When adjusting selling prices, suppliers always provide the retail chains with a detailed cost of production with confirmation of changes for each cost item: the network will not consider an unreasonable request. Even a reasonable increase is often accepted only partially by retailers, while adjusting their margins," he told Izvestia.

In December last year, the first stage of mandatory labeling of certain types of canned products. As reported to Izvestia in the CRPT, 135 companies producing canned fish are registered in the Honest Sign system.

More than 5.1 million units of products with a special code have already been delivered to store shelves. The top 6 regions in terms of the number of labeled canned fish included Primorsky Krai, Ryazan, Kaliningrad, Moscow regions, St. Petersburg and Vladimir Region.
