Russia and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea) plan to develop trade and economic cooperation. This was announced on February 26 by Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, following a meeting with Lee Hee-young, a member of the political bureau of the Central Commission of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK Central Committee) and its secretary.

Medvedev clarified that the Russian Federation and the DPRK are linked by long-standing friendship and good neighborliness, and the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement signed in 2024, in turn, meets the countries' desire to pursue an independent policy to protect sovereignty.

"We hope to give a serious impetus to the development of trade and economic cooperation," he wrote on his page on the VKontakte social network.

Medvedev called the signed Protocol on Expanding and Deepening Cooperation for 2025-2027 a serious step towards forming a dialogue.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Yevgeny Ivanov discussed with North Korean Ambassador Shin Hong Chol on January 24 simplification of the regime of mutual trips between countries. During the conversation, issues of consular cooperation were also discussed, including the protection of the rights and interests of citizens of Russia and the DPRK.
