Kalyn Georgescu, Romanian presidential candidate. Biography


After graduating from high school, the future politician also decided to link his life with agriculture and enrolled at the Bucharest University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine, graduating in 1986. And in 1999, at the age of 37, he received his doctorate in soil science.
For more than ten years, the scientist worked at the National Center for Sustainable Development of Romania, where he held the position of Executive Director. In this position, Georgescu coordinated the development of a national economic strategy in line with European standards.
He continued his career at the European Research Center of the Club of Rome, and then at the United Nations Institute for Global Sustainable Development in Geneva, where he also held senior positions.
Later, Georgescu joined the Alliance for the Union of Romanians party and began his political career. In 2020, the party nominated him for the post of prime minister. However, two years later, he was forced to leave the organization because of his statements that went against the party line. Meanwhile, the politician continued his political activities and in 2024 began campaigning as an independent candidate for the Romanian presidential election.
In his program, Georgescu focused on the themes of national development and sovereignty of the country, advocating for the support of local farmers, increasing tax benefits for Romanian producers, as well as reducing Romania's dependence on imports and strengthening the country's sovereignty.
In addition, Georgescu has repeatedly expressed skepticism about Romania's membership in NATO and criticized the leadership He spoke out in favor of establishing relations with Russia, for which he was repeatedly reproached for his pro-Russian views.
The first round of elections was held in the fall of 2024. At the end of November, the Central Election Bureau of Romania announced that, according to the results of the vote count, Georgescu became the leader, gaining 22.94%. However, in December, the Constitutional Court of Romania decided to annul the results of the first round. The re-election of the president is scheduled for May 4, 2025.
Georgescu himself called the decision to annul the election results a coup. Two criminal cases have been opened in connection with his election campaign. The independent candidate is accused of involvement in an organization with a fascist character and falsifying statements about the sources of financing the election campaign.On February 26, supporters of the politician reported that law enforcement officers stopped the car in which Georgescu was traveling and took him to the Prosecutor General's Office for questioning. Shortly before that, rallies were held in Bucharest in support of him.
Personal life
