In the short term, mitigation USA sanctions against Russia are possible when concluding a deal on In Ukraine, however, it is too early to talk about these measures. Malek Dudakov, an American political scientist, told Izvestia on February 26.

The day before, the US President Donald Trump told reporters from the White House press pool that US sanctions against Russia they may be lifted "at some point", but so far there are no such agreements.

According to the political scientist, the issue of lifting sanctions between the Russian and American sides has not yet been directly discussed — it is worth waiting for the resumption of diplomatic services. After that, a dialogue may begin on the topic of a complete easing or lifting of Washington's restrictions, he suggested.

"This will not be the fastest process — it may take a year or six months. But if the Trump administration tries to be faster with us (with Russia. If we agree on Ukraine, then it is possible to ease sanctions in the short term," Dudakov admitted.

He noted that it is still difficult to predict which restrictions the United States may lift in the first place, as this will be decided within the framework of Russian-American negotiations. However, the political scientist admitted that Washington will seek to mitigate those sanctions that negatively affect the US economy. This may include restrictions on supplies from the Russian Federation.

"These are, for example, imports of titanium for the American aerospace industry and imports of low-enriched uranium for American nuclear power plants. <...These are imports of steel, aluminum and some other metals to the United States, as well as imports of fertilizers," he said.According to him, after the introduction of restrictions on purchases of Russian fertilizers, prices for them increased, which "hit" workers in the American agricultural sector. Dudakov stressed that Trump would most likely like to thank the residents of agrarian states, many of whom supported him in the presidential election.

"As for Russia, in my opinion, easing sanctions in the energy sector should be a priority for us so that [they] do not interfere with the Russian oil fleet and the supply of Russian LNG (liquefied natural gas. — Ed.). It is desirable to ease restrictions in the financial sphere in order to make transactions with other countries easier," the political scientist concluded.

On February 20, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant stated that Washington is ready to both ease and tighten sanctions against Moscow depending on the course of the negotiation process.

At the same time, on the same day, the head of the Central Bank of Russia, Elvira Nabiullina She denied information that the regulator was allegedly involved in negotiations on the lifting of economic sanctions and the unfreezing of gold and foreign exchange reserves.

On February 18, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated that in the event of a settlement of the conflict in Ukraine, Western countries they will be forced to lift anti-Russian sanctions. According to him, it is necessary that all sides make concessions.

The negotiations between the Russian Federation and the United States took place on February 18 in Riyadh. The delegations of the two countries agreed to establish negotiating groups on Ukraine and restore diplomatic relations.
