The economist explained the reasons for banks' refusal to accept old-style dollars.

Due to restrictions due to anti-Russian sanctions and currency shortages, banks stopped accepting old-style dollars. This was announced on February 26 by Kirill Shcherbakov, Senior lecturer at the Department of Economic Theory and Behavioral Economics at Synergy University, Doctor of Economics, in an interview with "The newspaper.Ru».
"The main reason is the sanctions and related restrictions on Russian banks. Previously, financial institutions were free to send old banknotes for collection to foreign banks, exchange them for new ones and freely work with cash currency. However, this opportunity is limited now. <...In addition, due to sanctions, Russian banks are experiencing a shortage of cash dollars," the economist said.
He added that in addition to the Russian Federation, some countries also accept old dollars with caution. This mainly applies to the countries of Southeast Asia, India, Indonesia and several countries in Africa and Latin America. According to him, this is due to the fact that old dollar series are most susceptible to counterfeiting. The expert warned that before traveling to another country, it is necessary to exchange currency in advance.
On the eve, Nikita Chaplin, a member of the State Duma Committee on Budget and Taxes, said that banks had no right to refuse Russians $500 old-style. According to him, all Federal Reserve banknotes issued after 1914 are considered legal tender.
