Monument to Peter the Great dismantled in Poltava

In Poltava, the authorities dismantled a monument to the Russian Emperor Peter I. This was announced on February 25 by the Ukrainska Pravda newspaper on its website.

"In accordance with the decision of the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine, the monument to Peter I was removed from the public space of our city," the newspaper quotes the words of the acting mayor of Poltava Ekaterina Yamshchikova.

She called this step "an important part of the state's decolonization policy." According to local authorities, the future of the city "belongs to Ukrainian heroes and European figures."

Unknown persons in Odessa on December 17, 2024 the monuments to the Russian poet Alexander Pushkin and Count Mikhail Vorontsov have been desecrated. Vandals left inscriptions on the monuments demanding that the structures be dismantled.
