Friedrich Merz, chairman of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), whose party won the parliamentary elections in Germany in a bloc with the Christian Social Union (CSU), demanded that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz coordinate all diplomatic statements and decisions before he leaves office. This was reported on February 25 by the newspaper Bild.

According to the newspaper, the bloc of parties sent a "memorandum of understanding" to the chancellor's administration, in which he urged not to make important personnel decisions, as well as to behave carefully in foreign policy.

It is noted that these measures caused outrage in the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), however, they assured that Scholz would inform Merz on important foreign policy issues.

Parliamentary elections were held in Germany on February 23. The CDU/CSU bloc showed the best result, gaining 28.6% of the vote. The second place was taken by the Alternative for Germany (AfD) with 20.8%, the Social Democratic Party of the current Chancellor Olaf Scholz took the third place with 16.4%.

At the same time, the Free Democratic Party (FDP) and the new Sarah Wagenknecht Union Party (SSV) did not enter the Bundestag. On February 24, Merz announced negotiations on forming a coalition with the Social Democratic Party.
