German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius called on the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), which won the parliamentary elections, to quickly adopt an exception to limit the increase of debts above the established threshold in order to increase defense spending. The Bild newspaper reported on February 24.

"In order to sufficiently equip the Bundeswehr, it is almost inevitable to adopt an exception for the 'debt brake'. I have already demanded this repeatedly last year. My ministry's budget must be doubled by the necessary investments in the coming years, to more than €100 billion," he said.

The minister specified that we are talking about more than 3% of GDP. At the same time, Pistorius emphasized that it is not possible to save on other areas for the sake of it. According to him, the non-acceptance of the exception will be a "burden on the security" of the FRG.

Parliamentary elections were held in Germany on February 23. The Christian Democratic and Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU) bloc won with 28.5% of the vote. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in his congratulatory message to CDU/CSU leader Friedrich Merz pointed out the importance of increasing defense spending in Europe. He also specified that he looked forward to working with Merz at a "decisive moment" for the continent's security.
