Homemade cottage cheese without heat treatment may contain harmful bacteria. Irina Lyalina, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the State University of Education, biologist, told Izvestia about the beneficial and harmful properties of the product on February 25.

The expert noted that when stored improperly, pathogenic microorganisms begin to multiply in cottage cheese, which in some cases leads to poisoning.

In addition, the product can cause allergies in people with lactose and casein intolerance, as well as provoke weight gain and high cholesterol due to its high fat content. Excessive consumption of it can overload the kidneys due to excess protein, Lyalina stressed.

The biologist also spoke about the positive properties of cottage cheese.

"Cottage cheese is useful as a protein-rich product. The easily digestible milk protein (casein) in its composition promotes muscle growth and recovery. Calcium helps strengthen bones, teeth and nails, and prevents osteoporosis," the expert said.

The potassium and magnesium contained in cottage cheese strengthen the cardiovascular system, and vitamins B, A and E help strengthen the immune system, she stressed. The expert also recommended choosing a product with a fat content of 5-9%. According to her, such cottage cheese is easily digested and normalizes intestinal function.

The norm of consumption of the product for adults is no more than 200 g of cottage cheese per day, for children under one year — up to 20 g, after one year — 60-100 g, the biologist recalled.

On February 24, Marina Stepanyan, dietitian, Head of the Department of Clinical Dietetics at the Russian Children's Clinical Hospital of the Russian Ministry of Health, told Izvestia about useful toppings for pancakes. Among them, she indicated cottage cheese with five percent fat content, stewed or fresh fruits — if you want sweet. To prepare a more satisfying meal, the expert recommended adding stewed or baked meat as a filling, as well as trying a combination of light cottage cheese and lightly salted red fish.
