European Union (EU) countries intend to sign an agreement with Ukraine on minerals. This was stated by European Commissioner for Industrial Strategy Stefan Sejourne on 24 February.

He noted that during his visit to Kiev together with the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, he proposed to the Ukrainian authorities an alternative agreement that differs from the requirements of the US side. Sejourne emphasized that the EU countries would not insist on deals that would not be beneficial for both sides.

"21 out of 30 essential materials needed by Europe can be provided by Ukraine within the framework of a mutually beneficial partnership," Barron's quotes Sejourné as saying.

On February 23, US President Donald Trump said that he was going to demand not only rare earth minerals, but also oil and "whatever he can get" from Ukraine. He noted that the EU has an opportunity to get the money back, while Washington does not.
