The number of online movie theater users in Russia grew by almost a third
The number of users of online movie theaters in 2024 compared to 2023 has increased by almost a third - from 45 to 58 million, according to a report by TelecomDaily, which was reviewed by Izvestia.
The share of the top five ("Kinopoisk", Ivi, Okko, Wink and Kion) is growing, these services together control more than 86% of the market against 80% in 2023. At the same time, the number of paid subscriptions has grown even more significantly, by almost 33% - from 31 to 41 million.
According to Denis Kuskov, CEO of the agency, the growth of users is explained by the lack of advertising and diversity. He noted that online movie theaters are now actively expanding the lines of original content.
According to the study, as in all recent reporting periods, the leader is "Kinopoisk" with 14.1 million users, in second place - Ivi (10 million), in third place - Okko (9.6 million). The fourth line is Wink - 8.4 million, the fifth was the service Kion, which has 7.6 million customers.
However, the number of subscribers can grow if they purchase an ecosystem subscription. At the same time, users may not even use online movie theaters, Victoria Zagitova, operations director of the Breaking Trends communications agency and a member of the Russian Union of Journalists, told Izvestia.
According to her, the growing popularity of the services is due not only to the convenience of access to content, but also to the development of technology - from high-speed Internet to personalized recommendations. She also noted that the cost of a movie ticket is now equal to the cost of a monthly subscription.
She added that the prospects for traditional movie theaters depend on adapting to new realities. Event screenings, special formats such as IMAX, and integration with digital services such as co-releases can play an important role.
