The doctor pointed out the relationship of edema to serious diseases

If your hands and feet swell in the evenings, and you can see swelling on your face in the morning, you should not write it off to eating a lot of salty food. Swelling, especially those that appear regularly, can indicate serious health problems, said Alexandra Fileva, an expert physician at the Hemotest laboratory. She told Izvestia on February 25 about the causes of such a condition.
"From a scientific point of view, edema is excess fluid that from small blood vessels has entered the surrounding tissues. It often happens if a person sits or stands for a long time, consumes large amounts of salty and spicy food, is overweight or neglects the drinking regimen - drinking too little water. Swelling can also occur in pregnant women and shortly before menstruation," she said.
According to her, such swelling is considered physiological. To cope with them, it is necessary to adjust the diet, watch the drinking regime, move more, refuse salty dishes, alcoholic beverages, if possible to reduce weight.
In some cases, edema signals diseases that require immediate treatment. One of them is chronic heart failure. The heart stops pumping blood efficiently through the blood vessels, which further leads to swelling of the legs. Another common cause is kidney disease. About failures in the work of this organ can speak swelling of the legs and under the eyes, the doctor explained.
Sometimes edema develops in hypothyroidism - lack of thyroid hormones. Circulation of fluid in the body in this case slows down, and swelling occurs in the lower part of the body - on the thighs, knees, feet.
"Swelling is a frequent companion of diabetes mellitus. Glucose, which circulates in excessive amounts in the blood, goes outside the capillaries and accumulates in the surrounding tissues. The body tries to reduce glucose levels and signals the brain to drink water. As a result, the person consumes more and more fluid, it continues to seep into the tissues, and the circle closes," said Fileva.
More swelling is one of the common symptoms of an allergic reaction. In response to exposure to the allergen, the permeability of blood vessels increases and fluid from them escapes into the tissues located in the neighborhood, the expert added.
"If swelling is accompanied by severe shortness of breath, difficulty urinating, chest or abdominal pain, a sharp increase in blood pressure, you should consult a doctor or call an ambulance as soon as possible," the expert concluded.
Earlier, on January 29, Natia Chekhoeva, a gastroenterologist and endoscopist at Gastro Clinic, told Izvestia that systematic consumption of excessive calories inevitably overloads the body. This not only increases body weight, but also puts a strain on internal organs, including the heart, liver, and pancreas.
