With the right approach, a visit to sauna and baths can bring not a few benefits to health. However, men should remember that in the presence of certain diseases, including prostatitis, a trip to the steam room can turn into serious health problems, warned in a conversation with Izvestia on February 25, Bator Gonchikov, an andrologist and urologist at the SM-Clinica reproductive health center.

Speaking about such a common male disease as prostatitis, the doctor noted that exposure to high temperatures can aggravate the inflammatory process and increase unpleasant symptoms. Therefore, in the period of exacerbation of this disease, it is better to avoid visiting saunas and bathhouses.

Also men should remember that visiting a sauna or bath can aggravate the course of infectious diseases of the genitourinary system, contributing to the spread of infection and intensification of its symptoms.

"Another pathology worth mentioning is epididymitis, that is, inflammation of the testicular appendage (epididymis). In this case, high temperature is also dangerous, because against this background, inflammation can intensify, causing acute pain and enlargement of the scrotum," Gonchikov added.

According to him, being in the steam room is contraindicated in such a disease as orchitis - inflammation of the testicle on the background of infection. Otherwise, rest may end with increased inflammation, swelling, pain, redness of the skin of the scrotum and general deterioration of health.

"Varicocele (pathologic dilation of the testicular veins) is a fairly common disease in men. Exposure to high temperatures contributes to increased blood flow to the scrotum, along with which the venous outflow is also disturbed. As a result, the symptoms, including pain and deterioration of sperm quality, may worsen," added the urologist andrologist.

In addition, as noted by the specialist, heat exposure should be avoided in case of hydrocele - fluid accumulation in the testicular sheath, leading to its enlargement and discomfort. If the cause of the disease was an inflammatory process, the increased temperature can aggravate the condition.

"The question of the admissibility of visiting the sauna in the presence of these diseases, as well as any other problems with the genitourinary system, should be decided individually after consultation with a doctor-urologist," - concluded Gonchikov.

Earlier, on February 22, Olga Ionova, head of the Palmira Garden Hotel & SPA, told Izvestia that the proportion of men visiting spas has gradually increased over the past few years. According to her, unlike women, they prefer shorter procedures. Massage and hydrotherapy are among the most popular options.
