Merz announced coalition talks between CDU and SPD

The Christian Democratic and Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU) bloc, which won the parliamentary elections in Germany, will hold talks on forming a coalition with the Social Democratic Party of incumbent Chancellor Olaf Scholz, which came in third place. This was announced on February 24 by the leader of the CDU/CSU Friedrich Merz at a press conference on the results of the vote.

According to the head of the Christian Democrats, his bloc has already held a conversation with the board of the Social Democratic Party. Merz himself plans to talk to Scholz soon.

"I am determined to hold constructive, good and quick talks with the Social Democrats," the Berliner-Zeitung quoted him as saying.

The CDU/CSU leader also added that he hopes to form a government by Easter in April.

Parliamentary elections were held in Germany on February 23. The best result was shown by the CDU/CSU bloc with 28.6% of votes. The second place was taken by the AdG with 20.8%, the Social Democratic Party of incumbent Chancellor Olaf Scholz took the third place with 16.4%. At the same time, the Free Democratic Party (FDP) and the new party "Sarah Wagenknecht Union" (SSV) did not pass to the Bundestag.
