Obstetrician-gynecologist listed common myths about contraception

One of the most common myths about contraceptives is that their use leads to weight gain, Invitro obstetrician-gynecologist Nelli Krivoshchapova told Izvestia on February 25.
"In fact, a woman's weight can change for various reasons, including hormonal changes, diet and physical activity. Studies show that most modern hormonal contraceptives do not significantly affect weight. It is important to discuss individual characteristics with your doctor and choose an appropriate method," she said.
Another myth, according to the expert, is that contraceptives lead to infertility. But, emphasized Krivoshchapova, this is not true: after stopping the use of hormonal contraceptives, most women restore a normal menstrual cycle and the ability to conceive within a few months.
The third myth, the expert added, is that condoms are an ineffective method of contraception.
"In fact, they are one of the most affordable and reliable methods of protection against pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. When used correctly, their effectiveness reaches 98%," said the gynecologist.
The next myth is that emergency hormonal contraception can be used regularly. The expert emphasized that emergency contraceptive pills contain a shock dose of hormones and are not intended for regular use.
Another misconception is the belief that hormonal contraceptives cause cancer. According to the doctor, clinical studies show that combined oral contraceptives reduce the risk of some cancers, such as ovarian and endometrial cancer. But their use is associated with a slight increase in the risk of breast cancer, so the question of starting OCs should definitely be discussed with a gynecologist.
"Now, apart from traditional pills, other forms of contraception - patches, rings, implants - have appeared on the market. This gives women more options suitable for different lifestyles," said Krivoshchapova.
At the same time, hormonal means can cause nausea, headaches, mood changes, decreased libido, with the presence of contributing factors increases the risk of thrombosis. In rare cases, there may be a delay in fertility recovery, there may be irregular bleeding in the first months of use, the doctor warned. Non-hormonal methods, she said, can cause heavier and more painful periods, especially in the first few months.
Earlier, on February 21, gynecologist of the center of reproductive health "SM-Clinica" Anastasia Sokolova told "Izvestia" what products are recommended to exclude or limit during pregnancy. Among them are raw or undercooked meat, fish and eggs. Their danger lies in the fact that they may contain bacteria and parasites that can cause serious diseases and lead to miscarriage or premature birth.
