Peskov: Europeans are convinced of the need to continue the conflict in Ukraine

The European Union (EU), unlike the USA, demonstrates conviction in the need to continue the conflict in Ukraine. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said this on 24 February against the background of the introduction of the 16th package of EU sanctions against Russia.
The sanctions package includes both economic and personal restrictions. Peskov called the EU Council's decision itself predictable.
"This conviction of the Europeans completely contrasts with the mood to find ways of settlement around Ukraine, which, in fact, we are now doing with the Americans," Peskov said.
He also said that unlike the European Union, the administration of US President Donald Trump expresses a desire to end the Ukrainian conflict as soon as possible and goes for contacts with Moscow on this issue.
"We hope that Washington will fully analyze the root causes of the Ukrainian conflict. This is, in fact, what we have been trying to draw the attention of our opponents in Europe to," the Kremlin official said.
On February 21, Trump said that he did not see Russia's fault in starting the conflict in Ukraine. In his opinion, it occurred because of Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky, as well as former US President Joe Biden.
Peskov said that Russia was impressed by the position of the new administration in Washington on the issue of settling the situation in Ukraine. According to him, the new US administration holds different views - they say that it is necessary to establish peace as soon as possible and do it through negotiations.
On 23 February, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said that the next talks between the Russian Federation and the USA would be held at the end of next week. The diplomat noted that Moscow expects real progress from them. The first stage of talks between the Russian and US delegations took place on February 18 in Riyadh.
