More than 150 thousand residents of Canada have signed a petition calling to deprive American billionaire Ilon Musk of Canadian citizenship. This was reported by The Guardian newspaper on February 24.

As of February 23, the petition was signed by about 157 thousand people.

It is noted that Canadians are outraged by the close alliance of the entrepreneur with US President Donald Trump, who after returning to the White House has repeatedly threatened to turn Canada into the 51st American state.

"Musk is accused of 'engaging in activities contrary to Canada's national interests' while serving as an adviser to Trump," the publication said.

As the newspaper pointed out, with his threats of imposing high duties and annexing the country, the American leader has "aroused the contempt" of 40 million Canadians. The petition also argues that Musk's communication with Trump makes him "a member of a foreign government that is attempting to erase Canadian sovereignty."

Among other things, the document asks Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to immediately seize Musk's Canadian passport and revoke his citizenship in the country.

Trump said on February 2 that if Canada wants to achieve tax cuts and not pay customs duties, it should join the U.S. as the 51st state

For his part, Trudeau on Feb. 7 expressed his opinion that Trump's threat to make Canada the 51st state is real. According to him, the US President is not joking when he declares Canada's entry into the state, as he intends to gain access to the country's mineral resources.
