The Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) do not honor the terms of conscripts' contracts. This was reported by the British newspaper The Times, citing an unnamed officer of the Ukrainian Marine Corps.

"The army still does not honor the terms of contracts - recently we had guys who were transferred from the engineering brigade come to us. They enlisted as pontoon builders, but now they are infantrymen," the officer told the publication.

The military officer also said his contract was for the duration of the conflict. He added that "this is literally a one-way ticket."

Earlier, on February 12, the publication "Strana.ua" reported that, according to the new contracts, Ukrainian youth of 18-24 years old can serve under contract only in infantry brigades of the AFU, which are fighting on the front line.

Prior to that, on February 10, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the contract would provide for a payment of 1 million hryvnia (just above $24,000), free admission to a university without taking exams, and special mortgage terms.

Before that, on February 8, in an interview with Reuters, Zelensky announced his intention to lure young men from 18 to 24 years old (up to the draft age) to the AFU through special contracts.

Ukraine has been under martial law since February 2022. At the same time Zelensky signed a decree on general mobilization, its effect was repeatedly extended. Most men between the ages of 18 and 60 are forbidden to leave the country. In April 2024, the head of the Kiev regime approved the law on tougher mobilization.
