A chick of the curly pelican appeared in the Moscow Zoo

A chick of a curly pelican was born in the Moscow Zoo. This was announced by the director of the Moscow zoo Svetlana Akulova on February 23.
According to her, in winter these birds are in the "Birds and Butterflies" pavilion on the new territory, while in summer they can be seen in the outdoor pond, RT reports.
Both parents take care of the cubs, they take turns feeding them with regurgitated food and protecting them from intruders. Two years ago the couple already had offspring, these cubs have grown up and went to other zoos.
Curly pelican is a large bird inhabiting the central and southern parts of Eurasia, and also in some countries in Africa, according to the agency of city news "Moscow". From the pink pelican it differs not only in color, but also elongated and curled curly feathers, which form a similar mane. These birds fly and swim well.
During mating games they build nests. Only the female participates in this process, but the male brings the building material - grass, stones, twigs and even sticks, and they can be up to a meter long. Males may fight with each other while extracting them. During 30-40 days, the egg is incubated mainly by the female, periodically she is replaced by a male, writes the site kp.ru.
The chick reaches the size of an adult bird quite quickly, adding weight. At hatching its weight is about 100 g, and on the sixth day it rises to 500 g, for a month it grows to 7 kg. At about two and a half months the chick learns to fly, at the same time it acquires its first plumage and begins to eat independently.
The curly pelican is listed in the International Red Book as a species close to a vulnerable position, notes "Moscow 24". In Russia, the number of these birds is rapidly declining. In the world today it does not exceed 20 thousand individuals.
On February 16, the press service of the zoo said that the mother capybara gave birth to the ninth calf. The birth went well, zoologists did not even have to interfere in any way in the process. Four cubs have already moved to other zoos. In addition to the baby, in the group live two males, who will be a year old in the summer, and two daughters - Scarlett and Lapochka, reports Life.ru. In cold weather, the capybaras live in a warm indoor aviary, in summer the animals move to the South American lawn. There they enjoy the sun together with llama, guanaco and vicuña, notes 360.ru.
