"Sovremennik" premiered a play about a disabled veteran "Call sign Tishina"

The premiere of Oleg Tabakov Theater's play "Call sign Tishina" was presented at the Other Stage of Sovremennik. The production tells the story of how to start anew for a disabled veteran who has returned to a peaceful life.

The play is based on real events. The director Sevastyan Smyshnikov and playwright Oleg Antonov were told about them by volunteer Artem Vasilyuk. He went from volunteer to military invalid, then drank, went through rehabilitation and found salvation in table tennis.

"Artem interested us with his sincerity and willingness to share memories of his life. He was willing to have as honest and even intimate a conversation as possible. He shared such sensual topics that not everyone was ready to reveal. His story is diverse, ambiguous, and interesting," Smyshnikov shared.

The title "Call Sign Silence" was born from one of the strong impressions of the former combat participant. Vasilyuk remembered in detail the minutes of silence on the front line. When every rustle of leaves, singing bird was heard. In those places is very lacking silence, and Vasilyuk enjoyed it in the rare moments when it still happened.

The authors defined the genre of the play as "documentary drama". They did not dare to call Artem Vasilyuk's story a play. As the director explains, for the reason that life is not over and there will still be a lot of events in it.

"The production is on a topical subject, and to talk about events that are happening here and now, the language of the theater is very difficult. But the guys had the courage to do it. This is the story of a simple guy, there is nothing invented in it, there is no fiction. It consists of his stories and memories. Artem is a real Russian man - with his reflections, fear and faith", - said artistic director Vladimir Mashkov.
