Scientists from Tomsk Polytechnic University have developed a scheme for a power plant that will help develop resources of the underground "hot ocean" - water in the Earth's crust, heated by the planet's internal heat.

The development is based on the concept of binary-type thermal power plants. They use an intermediate coolant with a low boiling point, which makes it possible to tap relatively non-hot energy sources.

"As a working body in the system ozone-safe gas R245fa from the group of freons. This substance boils at a temperature of +470 degrees Celsius. Its application will allow to involve sources with temperature of about 60-700 degrees Celsius. This is enough to produce electricity of the required parameters with the help of the proposed scheme", said the project manager, associate professor of the Scientific and Educational Center of I.N. Butakov TPU Stanislav Yankovsky.

According to him, the station consists of a heater unit, evaporator, condenser, screw detander, generator, meters and control system. This includes remote ones. An experimental station with a capacity of 25 KW has been designed at TPU according to the proposed scheme. With its help engineers have worked out the modes of power generation on a model thermal well.
