Pistorius called the election result "catastrophic" for the Social Democrats

The preliminary results of the elections to the Bundestag are "catastrophic" for the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD). This was stated by German Defense Minister and SPD member Boris Pistorius on Sunday, February 23.
"This is a devastating, catastrophic result," he said on the air of the ARD TV channel.
In addition, Pistorius said that the party is ready for talks with the leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU/CSU) Friedrich Merz.
At the same time, the head of the German Defense Ministry refused to comment on the future of the SPD and Chancellor Olaf Scholz. According to him, now is not the time to discuss the cadres of his own party.
Earlier in the day it became known that according to the exit poll the SPD gained only 16.5% of electoral votes and took third place, which is the worst result for it in history. The CDU leads in the number of votes - the party was supported by 29% of voters.
After Scholz admitted the defeat of his party in advance, noting that the victory of the rival is a defeated result for the SPD. At the same time, Merz said that his party won the elections on February 23, and now it is necessary to create a workable coalition as soon as possible.
