Agreement on visa-free regime between Russia and Myanmar may be signed in March

Russia intends to sign an agreement on visa-free regime with Myanmar in March this year. This was announced by Russian Economic Development Minister Maxim Reshetnikov on Sunday, February 23.

"The agreement is in a high degree of readiness. Our goal is to sign this document during March. We hope for it," he told reporters on the margins of the 5th intergovernmental Russian-Myanmar commission on trade and economic cooperation, his words TASS reports.

It is specified that the Russian Foreign Ministry has made the last technical corrections to the agreement. It has already been sent to Myanmar for consideration and a response is expected.

Reshetnikov recalled that entry to Myanmar for Russian citizens is currently unilaterally visa-free, while Burmese can arrive in Russia on an electronic visa.

Thus, the minister explained that the agreement will completely cancel visas from both sides for up to 30 days.

Earlier in the day Reshetnikov at a meeting with Myanmar Prime Minister Min Aung Hlaing in Nay Pyi Taw discussed the implementation of investment infrastructure projects within the framework of bilateral cooperation. Trade and economic cooperation between Russia and Myanmar was also discussed during the meeting.

Prior to that, on February 12, Russia's Ministry of Economic Development told Izvestia that it is working to simplify visa processing and abolish visa regimes with a number of countries. The Russian side is working on the complete abolition of visas with several African countries, said Nikita Kondratyev, director of the multilateral cooperation department at the Economic Development Ministry.
