Data from the state election commissions of the Federal Republic of Germany show that the voter turnout in the elections to the Bundestag in Germany in the first two hours of voting was slightly lower than in the previous elections in 2021. This is reported by German TV channel NTV on February 23.

Thus, in Lower Saxony during the first two hours from the opening of polling stations voted about 13.8% of eligible voters. That's down from 14.3% in the 2021 election at the same time.

In the state of Schleswig-Holstein, 21.3% of eligible voters had cast their ballots by 11:00 a.m., down from 23.8% in the previous election. According to the media, the same situation was in Hamburg, where by 11:00 a.m. the turnout amounted to 45%, while four years ago it was 49.8%.

It is noted that these figures do not take into account citizens who voted by mail, so the real turnout may be higher. The final turnout will depend on the activity of voters throughout the voting day.

Polling stations for early elections to the Bundestag in Germany opened at 8:00 (10:00 Moscow time). It will be possible to vote until 18:00 (20:00 Moscow time), 59.2 million citizens of Germany are entitled to do so.

Earlier, on February 20, Alexander Kamkin, associate professor at the Finance University under the Russian Government, in a conversation with Izvestia, predicted the victory of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU/CSU) candidate for chancellor, Friedrich Merz. He noted that the CDU, having won the election, will conclude an alliancewith the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), but to form a coalition in the government they will have to take a third partner, and which political force it will be is the main intrigue, according to the expert.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on February 22 that he would like to stay in parliament even if he has to leave the government. At the same time, on February 5, the media reported about an attempt by the SPD leadership to dissuade the head of the government to go to the polls - the political force feared that he had no chance of winning if nominated. The Bundestag deprived Scholz's government of confidence in December 2024.
