The initiatives of US President Donald Trump and his administration aimed at a peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine are causing concerns among the state's Asian allies. The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported on February 23.

"Privately, some officials have expressed concern that Trump might make a deal with Chinese leader Xi Jinping over disputed Asian territories or allow North Korea's nuclear program to remain a threat," the piece said.

According to the newspaper, the United States currently has mutual defense pacts with Japan, the Philippines, South Korea and Thailand.

In turn, former advisor to Philippine President Julio Amador III emphasized that Washington's recent moves on the Ukrainian conflict have worried the military and political leadership of the state. This shows great doubts about the long-term priorities of the US in the conditions of global competition, Gazeta.Ru specifies.

Thefirst stage of negotiations between the delegations of Russia and the United States took place on February 18 in one of the palaces of the royal family in Riyadh. At the end of the meeting, the U.S. State Department reported that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov agreed to appoint high-level negotiating teams to begin work on the settlement of the Ukrainian conflict.

Later, White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt said that Trump considered the option of ending the Ukrainian conflict "this week" possible.
